Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon’s office returned a record $5.2 million to consumers through informal mediation in 2006, the office announced this morning.

The money was recovered for consumers in Missouri and other states without the need for filing legal action. The previous record recovery through informal mediation was more than $3.4 million in 2005.

During Nixon’s tenure, his office has returned more than $33 million to consumers through informal mediation, his office said.

“Our mediation efforts are quite successful in resolving consumer complaints and obtaining restitution without the need to set foot in a courtroom,” Nixon said in a written statement.

“Our track record of helping consumers get their money back by mediating their complaints is another example of how we’re continuing our work to make state government more effective and efficient,” the statement said.

In addition to the $5.2 million returned to consumers, Nixon’s office recovered $331,559 in consumer restitution through legal action.
